Cats will kill or torture hamsters so make sure to house in a tank and not a wire cage. I have hamsters - 4 tanks of them and a cat - she cannot get to the hammies but watches them all the time.
I also suggest making a wire screen top that can take the weight of the cat.
It is fun watching the cat try and catch the hammie and they totally ignore the cat!
