We recently brought home a Russian Dwarf Hamster - we’ve had him for a little less than a month. Every time we take him out of his cage, he poops…a LOT. We’ve tried his exercise ball (poops and pees in there), a playpen and a small square bucket (these two with toilet paper tubes for playing/hiding in), as well as holding him. Is he scared? And if so, how do we make him more comfortable?
His cage is in the family room, not an ideal spot I know because my youngest daughter and I are home during the day, but a bedroom is not a good choice and I thought if he was in another room where we are not at night, he would get no attention from the kids. Would it be ok to move him to a bedroom during the day and return him to the family room in the evening? How quiet does it need to be for him?
Finally, when I was watching him last night, he seemed to be running around his cage frantically, on and off of his exercise wheel, burrowing and all again. I know they are nocturnal and burrow by nature, but should it seem like he’s in a hurry to get someplace?

I don't think your hamster is scared. Pooping is there natural thing. Besides, if he is scared, he will probably bite.
If you were watching him at night, he wasn't in a hurry, hamsters have alot of energy so they need to run around.

He IS probably scared because it is a new home.Because just think if you were a hamster, minding your own buisness in your cage with your brothers and sisters at the pet store, and then all the sudden, a giant hand appears out of NOWHERE and then grabs you! Then the next thing you know, your in a brand new cage!Where's your food bowl with the petstore label on it?Nowhere. And what about your burrowing place? Not in sight. So you scurry around and explore.Hey!No friends!Anywhere! So you're thinking,What the HECK is goin on? And then,OH NO!!!!!!Another hand! You run.But since you haven't fully "explored" the place, you have NO idea where you're going. To make matters worse, the freakishly giant hand is gaining on you!You start to get tired. You get slower.

Don't worry, being small animals with a fast metabolism, they will poop and pee a lot.
I would say keep him in a single spot, moving him around constanly may stress him out. Just make sure it's normally a quite place, though, and away from anywhere where there tends to be a lot of sunlight coming in.
As for nighttime, that's perfectly normal. There are only so many places for him to go, so he'll be sure to explore every inch of his cage when he's filled with energy. If you want, you could put together a small network of tunnels using toilet paper rolls or something similar to put in his cage, for something new for him to explore.
